Taxpayers Spending Thousands to House Sex Offenders

October 2, 2009

wbay.com : Taxpayers Spending Thousands to House Sex Offenders.

Green Bay, WI -An ordinance designed to limit where sex offenders live could be costing taxpayers thousands of extra dollars each month.

“Roughly $3,000 a month to put people at the jail because they don’t have a place to live,” Roger Neveau of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections said.

It’s money coming out of your pocket to help sex offenders find places to live and work.

Green Bay’s sex offender residency restriction put in place in April 2007 is one of the toughest in the state. Registered sex offenders can’t live within 2,000 feet of places where children gather, including playgrounds, schools, and churches. It effectively eliminates 93 percent of the city.
